India opener Abhishek Sharma brushed aside concerns over the recent dip in form of Shubman Gill and Suryakumar Yadav, expressing strong confidence in the duo’s ability to deliver on the biggest stage.
“I’ll tell you one thing straight away, trust me. Suryakumar and Shubman will win matches for India in the World Cup, and even before that,” Abhishek said at the post-match press conference after scoring a fluent 35 in the third T20I against South Africa on Sunday. “I’ve played with them for a long time, especially Shubman. I know where he can excel and in which conditions, regardless of the opposition. I have full faith in him, and very soon, everyone else will too.”
Meanwhile, South Africa captain Aiden Markram admitted that the nature of the pitch caught both teams off guard, resulting in an unexpectedly low-scoring contest.
“Everything took us by surprise. It looked like a good batting wicket,” Markram said. “The Indian team felt the same, as did Ravi Shastri at the toss. We didn’t expect it to behave the way it did. It was challenging, and while we tried to adapt, we probably finished 20–30 runs short of a competitive total.”
