Gautam Gambhir’s tenure as the Indian Head Coach is facing severe scrutiny following a humiliating whitewash in the home Test series against South Africa. Gambhir’s record has been described as the worst in the modern era, with only 7 wins out of 19 Tests, resulting in a meagre win percentage of just 36.84%. With the next Test assignment scheduled for Sri Lanka in August 2026, there is talk of a potential change in leadership.

Here are three strong head coach candidates who could step in:

1. VVS Laxman

Currently, the head of the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (COE), VVS Laxman, has successfully served as a backup head coach on multiple occasions. He led the team during tours to Ireland, New Zealand, Zimbabwe, and South Africa. Under his guidance, the senior men’s team has an impressive record: in 21 T20Is and ODIs, they secured 14 wins and 3 ties. Notably, he also coached the team to a gold medal at the 2023 Asian Games.

2. Ravi Shastri

Often seen as India’s "go-to man in a crisis," Ravi Shastri brings a proven track record. During his tenure from 2017 to 2021, Shastri oversaw 43 Tests, achieving 25 wins, 13 losses, and 5 draws. His robust win rate of 58.1% included landmark victories on overseas soil, proving his ability to dominate both at home and away.

3. Anil Kumble

Though his previous stint ended prematurely due to clashes with leadership, Anil Kumble boasts the best statistical record among recent coaches. Between 2016 and 2017, Kumble managed 17 Tests, winning 12 and losing just 1. His outstanding win rate of 70.6% is the highest for any Indian coach with at least 15 matches. Under him, India also reached the 2017 Champions Trophy final.
