'The real question is...': Former India batter on MS Dhoni, Gautam Gambhir as mentor-coach pair

NEW DELHI: Having MS Dhoni as mentor alongside head coach Gautam Gambhir in the Indian cricket team setup would be a dream for thousands of fans. Speculation about the possibility has been doing the rounds, with former India batter Manoj Tiwary also expressing his wish to see it happen. Reports indicate that the BCCI is eager to bring Dhoni on board as a mentor for next year's T20 World Cup, to be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka. If the plan materialises, Dhoni will work alongside Gambhir, uniting India's 2011 World Cup victory heroes. Tiwary joked about how difficult it is to reach Dhoni, noting that he rarely answers calls or responds to messages. However, he stressed that the real question is whether Dhoni would be willing to accept the mentor's role. "Did he even pick up the phone? It's tough to get through to him because he rarely answers calls or even replies to messages," Tiwary joked, before adding: "The real question is whether he would accept the role. But if he does, his experience as a captain and a player will be invaluable. The younger players coming into the team have huge respect for him. A Gambhir-Dhoni combination on the coaching bench will be worth watching," he told ANI. Dhoni previously served as mentor during the 2021 T20 World Cup, when Virat Kohli captained the side under coach Ravi Shastri. With a glittering legacy that includes three ICC trophies as India's captain and five IPL titles with Chennai Super Kings, he appears a natural fit for the role once again. However, it remains uncertain whether the former skipper is ready to take up another high-pressure assignment.
