2nd Test: India on the verge of clean sweep against fighting West Indies

NEW DELHI: The Indian bowling attack faced a real test of determination on a slow, unhelpful sub-continental pitch but eventually succeeded, putting the hosts on the verge of a 2-0 clean sweep over a determined West Indies on the fourth day of the second Test on Monday. India need another 58 runs on the final day to seal the match after finishing the day at 63 for 1 in pursuit of 121. Jasprit Bumrah (3/44 in 17.5 overs), Kuldeep Yadav (3/104 in 29 overs), Ravindra Jadeja (1/102 in 33 overs), Mohammed Siraj (2/43 in 15 overs), and Washington Sundar (1/80 in 23 overs) bowled tirelessly for more than 118.5 overs in the West Indies’ second innings. Jasprit Bumrah breaks through with a stunning delivery to dismiss Jomel Warrican. Watch! They eventually bowled out the visitors for 390, leaving India with a modest target of 121 in the fourth innings. KL Rahul (25 batting) and Sai Sudharsan (30 batting) looked in control but were cautious after Yashasvi Jaiswal (8) perished in the deep. Earlier, Siraj struck a crucial blow with the second new ball, and Kuldeep Yadav ran through the lower-middle order as the Indian attack found rhythm post-lunch on Day 4. John Campbell (115 off 199 balls) and Shai Hope (103 off 214 balls) shared a 177-run partnership for the third wicket, displaying West Indies’ resilience, but the Indian bowling unit’s patience paid off once the second new ball was introduced after lunch. Former Indian player criticises Indian team management over Nitish Kumar Reddy’s limited bowling role Jayden Seales (32) and Justin Greaves (50 not out) added 79 runs for the final wicket, ensuring the game stretched into Day 5. It was a collective and disciplined bowling effort with Kuldeep, Jasprit Bumrah, Siraj, and Jadeja all contributing timely dismissals. The Indian bowlers can take confidence from having to toil long hours across two innings on a pitch that offered little assistance for either spin or pace. The dead track at Feroz Shah Kotla showed minimal wear even well into the fourth day. The deliveries stayed low, and it was more often the West Indies batters’ poor shot selection that led to wickets than any magical deliveries. The lack of excitement was evident even to the broadcasters, who focused more on the upcoming ODI series against Australia rather than dissecting the on-field Test action. In the morning session, Campbell completed his first-ever Test century in 25 matches with a six over cow corner off Ravindra Jadeja. With no bite in the track, playing spin was relatively comfortable until Campbell attempted an ambitious reverse sweep and was trapped leg-before. Even after Campbell’s dismissal, Roston Chase (40) and Hope appeared solid during their 51-run stand for the fourth wicket. It seemed West Indies could challenge India with a competitive fourth-innings target. - 81.5 overs- 118.5 overs Well done, West Indies - Incredible fightback shown in Delhi, there is some light in West Indies Test Cricket. 👏 pic.twitter.com/hL8O9LlCpP — Johns. Bumrah and Siraj, despite the docile nature of the track, managed to unsettle Hope with a few well-directed short balls, giving India the edge. (With PTI Inputs)
