New Zealand beat mighty Aussies by 89 runs as Super 12 stage gets underway

The Super 12 stage kicked off today in the ongoing T20 World in Australia. Defending champions Australia were up against the runners-up of the last T20 WC New Zealand where the hosts opted to bowl first after winning the toss at Sydney Cricket Ground.

The Blackcaps posted a total of 200/3 in their 20 overs and bowled Australia out for just 111 runs in their 17.1 overs. In this clinical victory of 89 runs Devon Conway was adjudged as player of the match for his brilliant batting performance.

New Zealand after losing the toss came out to bat and had an amazing start to their innings as Finn Allen played a fiery knock. Both Allen and Conway put up a 56-run opening stand.

New Zealand lost their 1st wicket in the 5th over as Allen departed for 42 runs in just 16 balls with 5 fours and 3 sixes.

They lost their 2nd wicket in the 13th over with skipper Kane Williamson getting dismissed for 23 runs in 23 balls. The next casualty came in the 16th over when Glenn Phillips was dismissed for 12 runs in 10 balls.

Conway remained unbeaten on 92 runs in 58 balls with James Neesham alongside who scored 26 runs in 13 balls. Josh Hazlewood was the stand-out bowler for the Aussies who took 2 wickets with Adam Zampa getting a single wicket.

Chasing the target, Australia had a horrible start to their inning as they lost the opener, David Warner, in just the 2nd over for 6 runs. Skipper Aaron Finch was the next to go as he was dismissed for 13 runs in 11 balls.

The star-studded batting line-up looked clueless with Mitchell Marsh getting dismissed for 16 runs followed by Tim David and Matthew Wade's dismissal as both departed cheaply.

Glenn Maxwell was the highest run-getter for Australia scoring 28 runs off 20 balls before getting dismissed. They were all out for just 111 runs in their 17.1 overs.

Mitchell Santner and Tim Southee were brilliant with the ball as they both took 3 wickets each. Trent Boult managed to find 2 wickets as well with Ferguson and Ish Sodhi getting a single wicket each.

The hosts suffered a heavy defeat of 89 runs in their opening game and will now have to find the momentum for upcoming games. Devon Conway for his brilliant knock was adjudged as player of the match.
