Former India wicketkeeper-batter Parthiv Patel has emphasised the importance of Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, and Abhishek Sharma as India prepare for the five-match T20I series against South Africa starting December 9. This series follows India’s 2-1 ODI series win and serves as a critical buildup for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup India and Sri Lanka 2026.

Jasprit Bumrah’s strategic role and Hardik Pandya’s comeback

After being rested for the ODI series, Jasprit Bumrah is set to return in the T20Is. Speaking on JioStar, Patel explained the strategic challenges in deploying Bumrah effectively:

"India has used him for three overs in the Powerplay since the Asia Cup, even in Australia. If he bowls three overs early, he only has one over left for the death, which is usually the 19th over. They will need to manage him carefully. Arshdeep Singh might partner Bumrah in the death overs," Patel said.

All-rounder Hardik Pandya, sidelined by a quadriceps injury since the Asia Cup 2025, has made a strong return through the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT), impressing selectors with his form for Baroda.

"Hardik’s comeback is key. He contributes with both bat and ball, and his experience helps guide the youngsters. He’s an important player, and I’m looking forward to seeing him back in action," Patel remarked.

Patel also highlighted Abhishek Sharma as a player to watch. Sharma has been in scintillating form in the ongoing SMAT, scoring 304 runs in six matches at an average of 50.67 and a strike rate of 249.18, including a century and two fifties.

"Abhishek Sharma is the player of the season. His runs at the top of the order will be crucial for India’s success in this T20I series against South Africa," Patel added.
