Rajasthan Royals entered their final league match of IPL 2026 against Mumbai Indians with a clear equation: win and qualify for the playoffs. Mumbai, already eliminated, had only pride and a chance to spoil RR's party left to play for at the Wankhede Stadium.
Hardik Pandya won the toss and chose to bowl first in the afternoon fixture, but the biggest team-news talking point came from the MI camp. Their premier fast bowler was not named in the XI for the last game of a difficult season, with Deepak Chahar coming in as Mumbai looked to manage bodies and finish a poor campaign on a positive note.
MI vs RR: Jasprit Bumrah rested for workload management
Jasprit Bumrah is not playing MI vs RR because Mumbai Indians have rested him for workload management.
Hardik Pandya confirmed the change at the toss, saying, 'We have had a tough season. Jassi resting, Deepak is playing.'
With MI already out of the playoff race and placed near the bottom of the table, the franchise had no reason to risk Jasprit Bumrah in a dead rubber for them. The decision makes sense given his workload and the upcoming international calendar.
MI head coach Mahela Jayawardene had also revealed before the final league match that Bumrah had been carrying a slight niggle since India's T20 World Cup campaign earlier this year. Because he played through that tournament, Mumbai had to manage his build-up carefully during IPL 2026.
Jayawardene said it was a 'collective conversation' with Bumrah and the training staff about how much he could bowl in nets and how far they could push him.
MI vs RR: A quiet IPL 2026 by Jasprit Bumrah's standards
This has been an unusually quiet season for Bumrah. He played 13 matches and took only four wickets, with an economy rate of 8.36. His bowling average crossed 100, and he also endured a five-match wicketless streak, the longest drought of his IPL career.
That is a stunning contrast to his usual standards. From 2016 to 2025, Bumrah had taken at least 15 wickets in every IPL season. In 2026, he could not get close to that rhythm.
The lack of wickets was not just tactical. Reports through the season suggested he was not operating at full tilt, and Mumbai appeared to manage his intensity carefully. For a team already eliminated, resting him in the final match was the sensible call.
RR get big boost in IPL 2026 Playoff decider
Bumrah's absence is a boost for Rajasthan Royals, who need to win to seal the final playoff spot. RR captain Riyan Parag returned after nursing a hamstring issue, while Ravindra Jadeja also came back after elbow and knee trouble. Nandre Burger was also included.
Parag said at the toss, 'Could be last game of the season. We'll play like it. Hopefully we maximise our opportunity and get ahead into the playoffs. Rather have this than depending on someone else.'
For Mumbai, this is about ending a rough season with a strong performance in front of their home crowd. For Rajasthan, it is far bigger: victory means qualification, defeat opens the door for others.
Bumrah's absence removes MI's biggest bowling threat, but Wankhede can still be dangerous if Mumbai’s batters give them enough runs to defend. For RR, the task is simple now: take advantage of a weakened MI attack and finish the job themselves.
