Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has strongly defended Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, hitting back at those questioning their place in the ODI setup. Ashwin said the two legends have nothing left to prove and that their discipline and longevity should serve as a blueprint for young cricketers.
His comments come after both senior batters enjoyed a prolific run in the ODI series against South Africa, which India won 2-1. Kohli amassed 302 runs in three matches with two centuries and a fifty, earning the Player of the Series award, while Rohit had earlier claimed the same honour in the Australia ODIs.
Despite their recent form, discussions continue around whether head coach Gautam Gambhir and the selectors see them as long-term options ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup. However, Ashwin believes their recent performances and unwavering standards speak for themselves.
"What do they need to prove? It’s laughable," Ashwin said on his YouTube channel. "The kind of work they've put in, the fitness standards Rohit has achieved, and the level at which Virat is batting, it’s a lesson for the next generation. In long careers, ups and downs are normal."
Ashwin stressed that commitment and sacrifice are essential for any player wishing to have a career like theirs.
"They don’t have to prove anything to anyone. Their attitude is a learning for youngsters, you must sacrifice, stay committed, and understand that the game is always bigger than the individual."
With the South Africa series complete, Kohli and Rohit have finished their international assignments for 2025. Kohli ends the year as India’s leading ODI run-scorer, the ninth time he has achieved the feat. The duo will next be seen in action during the ODI series against New Zealand from January 11.
