Pat Cummins named as Australia's new ODI captain

Pat Cummins has been appointed as Australia's new men's One-Day International captain. He replaces Aaron Finch, who announced his retirement from the ODI format last month. Cummins, who is also the Australian Test captain, will now lead Australia in the upcoming ODI World Cup.

Vice Captain Alex Carey, David Warner, and Mitchell Marsh were considered to be the leading candidates for the captaincy position following Finch's ODI retirement. Warner was ruled out of the race since his lifetime ban remains in effect while the board considers a modification to its code of conduct. Finch will remain the T20 captain while Pat Cummins will take the helm for the team's Test and ODI matches since Cricket Australia prefers two national captains rather than three.

Cummins will be the first fast bowler to captain Australia's men's squad in limited-overs cricket, and the first bowler to do so since Shane Warne.

"I have thoroughly enjoyed playing under Finchy and have learnt an enormous amount from his leadership. They are significant shoes to fill although we are extremely fortunate to have a one-day squad with a huge amount of experience".

Despite Cummins' most recent statement that he would heavily lean on others to fill in for him during certain series if he were appointed as captain, Cricket Australia has not yet named a vice-captain.

"You'd probably need to look at it a little bit differently to perhaps in the past with so much cricket going on if I was offered it. Just playing every single game isn't realistic. We've got a handful of guys that play all three formats. In a year like this, T20 becomes the focus leading to a World Cup. Next year might be different with the one-day World Cup".

Cummins appeared in 73 One-Day Internationals and took 119 wickets with an economy of 5.21. He has impressed everyone with his Test captaincy since taking over from Tim Paine last year.

"Pat has done an excellent job since taking on the captaincy of the test side and we look forward to him leading the one-day team to the 2023 World Cup in India. In our one day team, we do feel like we've got some strong leaders, some really experienced members of the team, and some developing leaders. So regardless of Pat being there, I think we are moving away from this concept of a captain taking over and their leadership being all-encompassing." - George Bailey, National Selecter Cricket Australia.

Australia is scheduled to play three-match ODI series against England starting on November 17.
