India won the first T20I against South Africa by 8 wickets. Indian bowlers restricted South Africa to 106/8, and half-centuries from KL Rahul and Suryakumar Yadav helped India to chase down the target easily on a difficult pitch.

India won the toss and opted to bowl first in Greenfield International Stadium at Thiruvananthapuram. India's new ball bowlers Deepak Chahar and Arshdeep Singh troubled the South African batters with swing bowling. Chahar got the wicket of Temba Bavuma in the first over.
Arshdeep Singh dismissed Quinton de Kock, Rilee Rossouw and David Miller in his first over. Chahar got the wicket of Tristan Stubbs and South Africa was 9/5 in the third over.
A fightback from Aiden Markram and Wayne Parnell took South Africa to 30/5 at the end of the powerplay. Harshal Patel dismissed Markram on 25(24) and Axar Patel got the wicket of Parnell. Keshav Maharaj took his time in the middle and then went on to score some valuable runs for South Africa. He smashed 17 runs from Arshdeep over which helped South Africa to cross the 100-run mark. He was dismissed by Harshal Patel in the 20th over. South Africa managed to score 106/8 in 20 overs.
Indian openers KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma walked into the middle to chase down an easy total but South African bowlers troubled both the openers. Rabada bowled his first over maiden and then got the wicket of Rohit Sharma in his second over. India was 17-1 after the powerplay, this was India's lowest score in the powerplay.
Virat Kohli was dismissed by Anrich Nortje on 3(9). Suryakumar Yadav played aggressive cricket while KL Rahul took his time in the middle. Suryakumar Yadav scored his half-century with a strike rate of 151.51 on a difficult pitch and Rahul smashed Shamsi for a six to score his half-century. India won the match by 8 wickets and also lead the three-match T20I series by 1-0. The second T20I of the series will be played on October 2 at Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati.
